Católica brought together Management and Law to create what would become Portugal’s first double degree programme. The programme is now celebrating its tenth anniversary, with an employment rate of 100%.

Católica’s Porto campus was the first higher education institution in Portugal to launch a double degree programme, which is now celebrating its tenth anniversary. Speaking to ECO, Luísa Anacoreta, a professor at Católica Porto SBE, and one of those responsible for this pioneering “two-in-one” programme in Law and Management, explains that, while initially it was necessary to prove the quality of its graduates to the market, today students can “easily” complete the double degree and already have a job waiting for them.

“The idea did not come from the Faculty of Law or the Faculty of Economics. It came from the presidency of the Porto Regional Centre of Universidade Católica Portuguesa. At the time, Professor [Manuel] Pereira Vaz was President and he wanted to showcase innovation,” recalls Luísa Anacoreta, coordinator of the double degree programme at Católica Porto School of Business and Economics. “We realised that there were Management graduates who wanted to study Law and vice versa. Law and Management already seemed to be reasonably connected,” she adds, noting that Católica already had joint master’s degrees in the two fields at the time, which were “very successful”.
